Original Title: Stranger Things
TV
So it's 1am & I just finished binge-watching Stranger Things - I was supposed to be asleep but like who needs sleep when there's Netflix, right? Literally, I had work tomorrow & I was like - nah, not gonna sleep till I finish this. My sister recommended this & honestly, she was not wrong. Not wrong at all. Like it was good - really good. I mean damn it was solid. The whole retro vibe, the 80s nostalgia, it was all just - wow.
But let me back up - this show, it's about this kid who vanishes, right? & his friends, they start looking for him - but they find this wierd girl instead. She's got powers, right? And she's on the run from some shady government people. Now, this is where things get wierd - I mean, like really wierd. This girl, Eleven, she can do things - like, move stuff with her mind & she has this connection to this other wierd dimension - the Upside Down.
Now, I'm not gonna lie - the whole Upside Down thing was kinda confusing to me. Like, it's a parallel universe or something? But it's all dark & spooky & there's this monster that lives there. Highkey, I was getting some major Silent Hill vibes from it. But whatever, it was still cool. I mean, it was definately different. And the kids, they were awesome - especially Dustin. Dude is hilarious. He's like if Chunk from The Goonies & Radar from M.A.S.H. had a baby & that baby was a total nerd.
So anyway, the kids, they team up with Eleven to find their friend & fight the monster. And there's this whole subplot with the missing kid's mom & the town sheriff trying to find out what really happened. It's like a mix of E.T. & The Goonies with a dash of Silent Hill thrown in. Not gonna lie, it was pretty awesome. Like, I was literally on the edge of my seat the whole time.
But, here's the thing - as much as I loved it, there were parts that kinda bugged me. Like, the government people - they were just so cartoonishly evil. I mean, I get it - they're the bad guys. But they were just so one-dimensional, you know? And the whole thing with Eleven's "papa" - it just felt a little too convenient, you know? Like, it occured to me that they coulda done more with that.
But overall, yeah, I loved it. I mean, it was like a love letter to the 80s - and I'm a sucker for that kinda stuff. So yeah, I'm gonna watch it again. Prolly tomorrow after work. My roommate hated it tho - said it was too "cliche" or whatever. But what does he know? He thinks The Office is boring. Can you believe that?
Anyway, that's my take on Stranger Things. It's like if The Goonies & E.T. had a baby & that baby was raised by Stephen King. It's not perfect, but it's a hell of a ride. So yeah, watch it. You won't regret it. But now, I need to get some sleep. Night, y'all.
